The Sports Club of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) successfully organized its much-anticipated provincial cricket tournament on the 5th of June, 2024. Held with great enthusiasm and participation, the tournament brought together engineers from various parts of the country in a spirited display of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The event was graced by the IESL President Eng. (Prof.) Ranjith Dissanayake, as the Chief Guest aimed to promote sports participation among engineers. In his opening speech, the President emphasized the importance of sports in building teamwork, fostering wellness, and enhancing the overall professional development of engineers. He emphasized the importance of increasing the number of sports activities and encouraged members to participate in such events, highlighting how it influences to make a mentally balanced professional.

Ten teams representing, (a) eight provincial chapters of IESL, (b) YMS members in Colombo and (c) employees of IESL Head Office participated in the competition, showcasing their skills and fighting spirit in the field.

Four teams; Rajarata Warriors, representing the Rajarata Chapter, Vadakkin Super Strikers, representing the Vadakkin Chapter, Wayamba Titans representing the Wayamba Chapter and Sabare Strikers representing the Sabaragamuwa Chapter emerged for the semifinals based on their performance in the first round matches conducted on league basis.

The final match was the highlight of the day, saw Rajarata Warriors and Vadakkin Super Strikers, go head-to-head in a thrilling encounter. Both teams demonstrated exceptional cricketing prowess, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats until the very end.

After a closely contested game, Rajarata Warriors emerged victorious, clinching the title by a close margin. Their teamwork, strategic play, and persistence paid off in a memorable finale, earning them well-deserved applause from fellow engineers and spectators alike.

Though Vadakkin Super Strikers became runners-up in the tournament, their performance during the tournament was exceptional and they were the only unbeaten team in the tournament up to the Finals, therefore many predicted their win at the finals.

Sabare Strikers become third-place winners, awarded under the “Best Looser” criterion, considering their run rate achieved in the semifinals compared to Wayamba Titans.

The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony, where the IESL President presented the championship trophy to the Rajarata Warriors. He praised the teams for their dedication and spirit, reiterating the importance of such events in bringing the engineering community together.

The tournament was not only a celebration of cricket but also a testament to the unity and enthusiasm that sports can inspire among professionals. The Sports Club of the IESL hopes to make this an annual event, with plans to encourage even more participation in the years to come.
